Tom loves Antwerp
"Antwerp isn't just a city. It's a country, it's a continent, it's a state of mind"
Niet te missen: this week's issue of Knack is all about Antwerpen! Tom's on the cover of the Focus supplement, there's a 6-page interview with him - including one fantastic photo - where he talks about his own town: "I'm horribly nervous: this is the first time that I'm going to talk for real about my town". Not much about dEUS, but a great, lovely interview. The magazine comes with 'Antwaarps Lawijt' ('Antwerp Noise') an audio CD containing tracks by 15 Antwerp acts, including Suds ∧ Soda and Summer's Here, plus songs by Stijn, The Kids, Mintzkov Luna and Think of One to name a few.

Tom goes Blue Note
StuBru announced last week that, like Buscemi and Sven Hees did before him, Tom's going to compile a 'Blue Note Sidetracks' album for the Blue Note jazz label. Should be out early next year. [thx to Arthur]

Tom vs Justine
As part of the "Greatest Belgian" contest (see earlier news), Tom is set against tennis champion Justine Hennin in today's "duel" on De Standaard's website. You can register, vote for your favourite, the winner outs the loser. [thx to bart vb] Also check Bart's related article on Tom on the same website.

Craig about dEUS
Yesterday's entry on the Love Substitutes' blog - Craig's not happy about their HofTerLo gig: "It felt like a dEUS gig - I may have been there physically, but my heart was in a pub watching Liverpool vs Juventus."

Vlaams Belang, down?
Vlaams Belang, a far-right party, is gaining critical momentum in Flanders, and particularly in dEUS hometown Antwerp. Interviewed in this week's issue of Focus Knack, Tom finally gives it a go: he would like dEUS to organise a big festive event against VB in Antwerp next year, on the day before the communal elections. Tom say's he's been keeping away from politics for too long, and now it's time for him to send a clear signal. But Tom's words are mitigated by Christian Pierre, dEUS manager, in today's issue of newspaper De Morgen: Tom's words were taken out of their original context, he says, and "such an event against VB would certainly not be organised by dEUS". Stop-Start Nature
That's the (unconfirmed) title of the new album, as reported yesterday by Tom himself on the official website. It will have twelve songs, those we heard in 2004, plus new titles like "Firewinds" and "Smoker's Reflect" among others. Tom also confirms that the album will be released worldwide by V2 in September, and that a worldwide tour, including the USA and Australia, will follow. Tom concludes with "have a great summer" - no festivals?

September...
Turns out Rock'n'Folk mag was wrong about the album release date. Interviewed about the "grootste Belg" thing, Tom said on Radio 1 that it would be September.
Tom, greatest Belgian?
Canvas TV and Radio 1 (Flemish public media) are looking for the greatest Belgian of all time. Tom Barman made it to the long list, along with 99 other illustrious Belgians, including Rubens, Erasmus, Magritte, Horta, King Baudouin, Van Eyck, Brel... You can have a look at the long list, suggest yet another candidate, and vote from April 25 to May 15. That'll give the 10 greatest Belgians in October, and after that you can vote again to choose The Belgian One. Or not. [thx to gabhq79]
