ZAMU video awards

ZAMU is the name of the Flemish union of singers and musicians. They're organising awards of Flemish music every year. Here are the dEUS-related nominees.

First, there's a special contest for the "best video of the decade". The nominees are Arno, Hooverphonic, Axelle Red, Ozark Henry, Das Pop, Gorki, Soulwax, Millionaire, Moondog Jr and dEUS (with the Roses video).

Tom is a nominee for "singer of the year", he's the only male in that category. The women are Jo Lemaire, Eva De Roovere & Hooverphonic's Geike Arnaert.

And there's a Vive La Fête song (Noir Désir) and a Magnus one (Summer's Here) among the 50 choices offered for the "best song of the year" award.

A little bit of history: in 1994 (the 1st ZAMU awards), dEUS won in 4 categories: best video, best album, best debut, and best band. In 1996, best video, best album, best band and best single. Surprisingly, they didn't win anything in 1999 (the best album award went to Helmut Lotti, go figure....). In 2001, they won the "best single" award for Nothing Really Ends.

The ZAMU awards website is here. You can vote for the best song and best video. The ZAMU show will be aired on Canvas TV's 'Plankenkoorts' on Feb. 22. [thx to koen]

Tom in Het Nieuwsblad

A full-page interview with Tom in this weekend's issue of Het Nieuwsblad. In it we learn that:

You can read the article in the press section. [thx to Jonas]

Talking of film... Erik Van Looy's "De zaak Alzheimer" -a thriller set in Antwerp- is a huge success in Flanders, over 500,000 viewers. In the December 17 issue of Knack/Focus, there's a 4-page interview with Erik, winner of the entertainment category of the "Mensen van het jaar" contest - Tom came 3rd with 12.3%. Van Looy says he's surprised that AWTWB didn't have more success in the big movie festivals: "It was the perfect film for them. Pure rock'n'roll." He also thinks that Tom Barman and Koen de Bouw (the main actor in Alzheimer equally deserved to be "mens van het jaar". He picks the AWTWB soundtrack as one of the best albums of 2003 (along with Justin Timberlake & Coldplay a.o.)

Tom interviewed by La Libre

On La Libre Belgique's website, Tom is interviewed by Laurent Hoebrechts (Dec. 30). They talk about the "Live" album, and a little about Magnus and dEUS. Funny detail: the article is posted in the electronic music section. Read it here. [thx to Laurent]

dEUS albums in Blitz top-1000

Blitz, a Portuguese music weekly, celebrates its 1000th issue by listing the best 1000 albums since 1984.

From Tiago on the forum: "They made a list of 50 albums per year. Half of these are in the "Light" category, meaning, albums that hit the streets and were critically acclaimed, enduring in time and maturing as expected, maintaining their brilliance in debut etc etc.... like wine, one might say.

The remaining 25 were albums that are in the "Dark" category, meaning, albums that were overseen as "could be better", or "didn't quite hit the spot" BUT, that after some time, years, revelaed to be very important and really good and a "must have" in a collection... sort of a redemption for not being in the "Light" category in the first place."

All 3 dEUS albums are listed in the "Luz" (light) category.

Vive La Fête's latest album "Nuit Blanche" is also reviewed, it gets 6 out of 10.

Luz top 25 for 94, 96 and 99
