Tom vs. AIDS

Tomorrow at the Fill Collins Club in Antwerpen, as part of the World Aids Night, the "Antwerp Superstar DJ Crew" will spin the discs to support Geef, an association that fights against AIDS. Tom Barman and Mauro Pawlowski will be among those DJ's.

Random news

Back from Tom/Guy@Vooruit, woohoo! Same tracks as the Antwerpen gig, plus Little Arithmetics, nice! After the set I talked to manager Christian Pierre, here's a digest:

- Tom has already written a bunch of songs for the new dEUS album. "Old school style." dEUS will start touring in August 2004 (festivals then) before embarking on a big autumn tour! Yippee!

- The Magnus album will be released on January 24 "and half the songs target the dancefloor"

- The AWTWB DVD will be released in April and will include a (subtitled!) making-of. It's the video that was shown on the big screen in the park at the party after the Antwerp premiere.

- As usual, I forgot to ask all the REALLY interesting questions. We still don't know what Tom eats for breakfast. Sorry about that ;)

Here's a (crappy) little gift - out of curiosity, I used the camcorder feature of my digital camera. So here's a one-minute video of old school rock!

Man of the year

Funny, this: the Flemish newsweekly Knack nominated Tom as potential "people of the year 2003" (entertainment). You can vote on the "Mensen van het jaar" website! Here's the page devoted to Tom.

There's a short Q&A with Tom, not the usual stuff:

Personal highlight: "The international premiere for AWTWB on Piazza Grande in Locarno: an open-air screening on a gigantic screen for 6000 people, a moist 35°C evening under a wonderful starry sky"

Biggest disappointment: "The metaphysical acknowledgement that, despite the massive media attention, only 70,000 people have seen the film. I hoped for 80,000. After all those years, I'd like to hit a milestone, regarding the number of viewers."

His choice for 'People of the year - Entertainment': "The Dewaele Brothers, because they kicked the worldwide DJ culture in the ass with their simple philosophy that comes straight from the heart: 'drop that fanatic labelling-thinking, all music is good music'. And Tim Vanhamel, because he did manage to start a band with QOTSA's Josh Homme, Eagles of Death Metal, with whom he's going to tour America."

His international choice: "Moloko! I only knew the singles from their previous album, but I completely fell for Statues, their latest release."

His expectations for 2004: "That Magnus fares well, that we make a beautiful new album with dEUS, and that I get loads of inspiration for a new film. Dutch-speaking again, yes."

And in 10 years' time: "Two more films, including an English-speaking one. Married and two kids: one aged 3 and one aged 1 1/2."

Other nominees for "Mensen van het jaar 2003" include King Albert II, prime minister Guy Verhofstadt, Admiral Freebee's singer Tom Van Laere, tennis champion Justine Henin, Lamborghini designer Luc Donckerwolke, and the unlucky workers at Ford Genk, among many others.

Oh, don't complain it's all in Dutch - it's about time you'd make the effort and learn the language. So perhaps you'll be a nominee for dEUS Fan of The Year 2004 ;-)

Studio Barman

There's a Barman feature on the Studio Brussel website, with a snippet from a phone interview with Tom and you, faithful fans, will learn nothing from it. It's here! [thx to Bart Van Belle]

Tom Barman - Guy Van Nueten: LIVE

Tom & Guy's live album is now in (Belgian) stores. It's a 2-CD set, CD1 has the 11 regular CD tracks and CD2 the 6 SuperAudio tracks, but fortunately, both CD's are fully playable on all standard CD players. Phew!

By the way, the boys were great yesterday at Bourla Theater in Antwerpen. Tom was in a superfunny mood, joking all the time - sometimes failing pathetically :) I posted a review on the official forum, check it out!

dEUS ex machina

In December, Flemish Radio 1's "Cucamonga" program will celebrate the 10-year anniversary of Zea's release. Every Monday from 21:00 to 23:00, starting December 1, Hilde Walschaerts will air a part of a big dEUS special called "dEUS ex machina". It's all in Dutch, and you can listen by clicking on the "Luister live" link on Radio 1's homepage. [thx to Quinten]

dEUS bracht later de mini My Sister = My Clock (1995) uit en de cd's In a Bar, under the Sea (1996) en The Ideal Crash (1999).

Queens want Tim

Here's a bit of news from Webzine Nameless (a.k.a. The-Proud-Guys-That-Knew-Julle-Was-Out-Six-Months-Before-The-Rest-Of-The-World-Did). Tim Vanhamel's Millionaire supported Queens Of The Stone Age on several occasions during the "Songs for the Deaf" tour. Josh Homme, QOTSA's frontman, asked Tim to join him in his other band called "The Eagles of Death Metal". Does this mean Tim will say goodbye to dEUS? Erh... perhaps.
