Road map

As you know, in November Tom & Guy Van Nueten will release an album with their favourite moments of their 2001-2002 acoustic "tour". Tom said on Radio 21 that they will also play 3 gigs later this year. As for dEUS: Tom said that they'll record the next album over a very short period (3-4 weeks), he wants it to be as energetic as W.C.S. ("We'll be very noisy"). And the Magnus album will be released in October (instead of September). The AWTWB soundtrack will be available next week.

Radio 21

It's 17:00 and in a few minutes Tom will be interviewed by Rudy Léonet on Radio 21. Webcast here!

Tom in 16HP side-project

Jean-Yves Tola and Pascal Humbert, two members from the Denver band 16 Horsepower, have a project called Lilium. Their 2nd album "Short Stories" will be released on June 23, and features Tom Barman on the song "Sorry". Tom & Kal Cahoone wrote & sang the words. More information can be found on this 16HP site. DJ Tom

The last "Barman & Co." party of this season will take place this Saturday at the usual place, Studio Athanor in Brussels. Indie rockband Monsoon will play at 10 pm, then Tom will do his thing at 1.30.

It's the LAST Barman & Co for this season so don't miss it!

Monsoon are a briljant leftfield alternative band of extreme genius. This powerful & sometimes ominous band mean business & deliver spine tingling guitar riffs over an erratic & almost tribal backbeat. This is complimented by the fierce & melodic vocals that are a cross between P.J. Harvey/Courtney Love and Miranda Sex Garden and infectious and catchy but dark songs with emotion and power.

All this followed by a swell party with residents Tom Barman & Gaspard Kinc (Igor)
Doors: 9pm Concert : 10pm 6 euro including party (!)
Party : 12pm 8 euro

Tom & CJ in Knack/Focus

This week's Focus (cultural supplement of newsweekly Knack) is dedicated to Flemish film. There's a 3-page interview with Tom about AWTWB, and 10 questions to CJ Bolland, Tom's partner in Magnus. Log on to Focus' website to win one of the many AWTWB goodies.

Jules out?

Last Sunday Alex Stevens said on Webzine Nameless, his musiczine en français, that Jules De Borher might leave dEUS, and that Tom is currently auditioning for a new drummer. I haven't heard anything about this... We'll see.

This summer's blockbuster

So I went to the world premiere of Any Way The Wind Blows. Personal tastes are personal, but here's my opinion : this is possibly the best "atmosphere" film I've seen, and I'm not saying this to lick Tom's ass. You won't get bored for a second. And it has one hell of a great soundtrack. The film will be released in Belgium on June 18 (with subtitles in Brussels in Wallonia, so don't worry if you don't know shit about Dutch)

Oh, victory : in the fight between Warner VS and Radiohead fan sites, fans are winning! Warner are apparently going to issue free licenses to let fan sites publish copyrighted contents like lyrics.

Record companies VS Music fans (history repeating itself)

taken from http://www.youthradio.org/This has nothing to do with dEUS, but as webmaster of this site, and a Radiohead fan, I really resent this. In a new blow to music fan sites, Warner/Chapel, which holds the rights to Radiohead songs, is asking several leading unofficial RH sites, including Ateaseweb and Green Plastic, to take off their whole songs/lyrics section, justifying their case by (rightfully) saying that they own the copyrights to those lyrics and by (how horribly wrongly) arguing that those websites harm the sales of Radiohead stuff, like say, songbooks! Trouble is, there is no such thing as an official Radiohead songbook in print, and if there ever was, who would buy it? The exact same people that come back day after day to their favourite website about their favourite band, those lovely fools that rush to get their hands on the newest single, who wake up at 4 in the morning to queue and get a chance to buy a ticket to see their heroes on stage...

A leading record company is once again on the path of war against those same fans who give them the money that make their very existence possible. I'm not naive enough to think that we'll make them change their minds, but at least we can try. There's an online petition, sign it if you agree.

The sample behind Summer's Here

The choirs and vibraphone on Summer's Here come from a very moody Donald Byrd song called "Cristo Redentor", from his 1963 album "A New Perspective" (with Herbie Hancock on piano). (thx to Koen)

Listen to Summer's Here at StuBru: hi-fi or lo-fi. The song starts at 30:05, link valid 'till next Sunday.

Tom on StuBru

Tom was on Studio Brussel's 'Brussel Vlaams' minutes ago. I don't understand Flemish well enough to give a good report, so just a few things I think I got... Take the following with a pinch of salt!

- Of course, they talked about film. Tom said that he doesn't like "happy" films, but he has nothing against blockbusters provided they're well written and directed.

- When he first heard Evil Superstars, it was in a van and he was blown away.

- Asked about whether he'd work again with Stef Kamil Carlens, he said that he's not against the idea, but "Stef is busy with Zita Swoon and a theatre project, and right now, we're on two totally different planets as far as music is concerned".

- He was surprised at not having to pay very much for using some songs by "big names" in his film. Christian Pierre, his manager, almost became a "sociopath" because of all the phone calls he had to pass to get the right to use the songs. Tom's particularly happy about having QOTSA music in the film, even though he didn't get the right to use it on the O.S.T. (correction by Arthur). Seems he's friend with Josh Homme from that band.

- A compilation of live acoustic recordings with Guy Van Nueten will be released in November!

- About the next album: it's going to be more like WCS, "Roses-like". He doesn't want to be in studio for 9 months this time like they did with TIC. (thx to Antowner on the forum). Rock'n'roll, much like If You Don't, which will "definitely" be on the tracklist.

- songs played (some selected by Tom): dEUS/Suds & Soda, Evil Superstars/Nothing But A Sluthead ("This is a BOMB"), dEUS/Opening Night, Moondog Jr/Bombo ("Zita Swoon is Moondog Jr., only the name is different"), Toy (?)/Suspicion, Magnus/Summer's Here, Jacques Brel/Orly (Tom's completely in awe with Brel), Tom Barman & Guy Van Nueten/Serpentine, The Kids/There'll Be No Next Time, dEUS/If You Don't ("dat is een Danny moment")

Even more tickets

HUMO also has an AWTWB competition. People there seem ecstatic about the movie ("Kortom, échte cinema!"). 285 tickets for the premiere on Thu. 10 in Leuven can be won here. Tom Barman will be there! (this info thanks to Arthur on the ISR forum)

Win tickets for the AWTWB premieres

You can win tickets to the Any Way The Wind Blows world premiere by entering the AWTWB competition on Canvas (Flemish TV channel, belongs to the VRT network along with StuBru). It's here, at the bottom of the page. Answer this simple question : what are the names of the Dardenne brothers?

And starting Wednesday, June 11, Canvas will broadcast a selection of films chosen by Tom!

Studio Brussel* also has a AWTWB competition! You can win tickets for one of 4 premieres in Brugge, Hasselt, Gent or Kortrijk. Enter the competition here! The question asked is "In which Queen song can the sentence 'Anyway the wind blows' be heard?" - not too difficult to find.

*they're definitely going for the award for "Best provider of dEUS-related excitement"

Heroes of the 90's

dEUS in Knack Focus. Click to see the whole articleFlemish radio Studio Brussel recently released its yearly "Album100", a ranking of the best albums ever recorded according to their listeners. As usual, dEUS scored very well, with all 3 albums in the top 20 (IABUTS 13th, TIC 15th and WCS 18th). Oh, I wouldn't have given this much attention, as I don't care for music charts very much... but Flemish newsweekly "Knack" dedicated a large chunk of the May 28 issue of Focus, its cultural supplement, to the Album100. So we get reviews of the dEUS albums, a short article about the impact dEUS have had on the Belgian music scene, and -isn't life beautiful- a full-page band photo! It's all here.

Tom on StuBru, NOW

Sorry I forgot to tell about this: Tom is nu op StuBru's Brussel Vlaams (18u-20u). Luister hier.
